Policy on Responding to Geopolitical Situations

  1. Purpose
    This policy outlines how Romerike International School (RIS) will respond to geopolitical events
    that may affect its community. It aims to provide a consistent, values-based, and neutral
    approach that protects student well-being, upholds international-mindedness, and maintains the
    school’s mission and integrity.
  2. Guiding Principles
    ● Neutrality: The school will not endorse any political positions or parties in global,
    national, or regional conflicts.
    ● Respect: We affirm the dignity, rights, and cultural identities of all members of our school
    community.
    ● Empathy: We recognize that geopolitical crises can deeply affect individuals and will
    respond with compassion.
    ● Education First: As an IB school, our role is to foster critical thinking, intercultural
    understanding, and peaceful conflict resolution.
  3. Scope
    This policy applies to all stakeholders, including:
    ● School leaders and staff
    ● Students and families
    ● External communications and partnerships
    ● Curriculum design and co-curricular programs
  4. Policy Framework
    4.1 Monitoring and Assessment
    ● The Educational Leadership Team (ELT) will monitor significant geopolitical events that
    could impact the school community.
    ● The ELT will consult staff and community members as appropriate to assess emotional,
    safety, and communication needs.
    4.2 Communication Protocol
    ● Internal Communications: ELT will release internal updates where relevant, using
    neutral language and focusing on community support.
    ● External Communications: Public statements will only be made when:
    ○ The event directly affects students or staff safety
    ○ It is necessary to affirm school values (e.g. against discrimination or violence)
    ○ Government authorities require a response
    ● All communications must be pre-approved by the Principal or designated representative.
    4.3 Curricular Response
    ● Teachers may address relevant topics through inquiry-based learning, encouraging
    students to understand multiple perspectives.
    ● No political endorsement, protest, or symbolic alignment will be permitted within the
    classroom setting.
    ● Controversial issues should be discussed with a balanced view and within the framework
    of IB learner attributes.
    4.4 Student & Staff Wellbeing
    ● Students or staff affected by geopolitical events may request support from the HOS or
    Nurse.
    ● Cultural or emotional sensitivities should be acknowledged respectfully during
    discussions or community events.
    ● In cases where certain topics may cause distress, staff are encouraged to inform the
    ELT and seek guidance on adaptations.
    4.5 Public Events and Displays
    ● Flags, slogans, or symbols representing political stances related to ongoing conflicts will
    not be displayed on school property.
    ● School events must be politically neutral, with inclusive messaging that fosters unity.
  5. Conflict Sensitivity Training
    The school will offer periodic training to staff on:
    ● Discussing global conflict with neutrality
    ● Recognizing bias and cultural sensitivity
    ● Supporting students affected by trauma or loss due to conflict
  6. Escalation Procedures
    If a geopolitical situation threatens to escalate:
    ● A special Crisis Response Team will be convened by the Principal.
    ● Decisions on safety, school closure, and community advisories will follow national
    regulations and coordination with local authorities.
  7. Review and Evaluation
    This policy will be reviewed annually, or immediately in response to a major geopolitical event,
    to ensure appropriateness and alignment with international best practices.
