Programme

RIS provides a transdisciplinary programme of
internationally-oriented education to foster the development of the whole child.

We are authorised to offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and our goal is to become authorised in IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) before August 2024.

In order to become authorized by the IB, among other requirements, schools need to prove that they have established a curriculum that is in line with IB guidelines and requirements. Therefore, we are already implementing a curriculum designed in accordance with the IB Standards and Practices.

Aware of the fact that some students may need to move to the Norwegian system, we offer Norwegian language classes with a view to maintain a high standard of speaking, reading, and writing skills.

The Primary Years Programme

At RIS, the Primary Years Programme (PYP) welcomes students from Grades 1-6.
The PYP allows for a Transdisciplinary approach to learning, which refers to learning that is not confined by traditional subjects but conveys learning that has relevance across and beyond subjects.

The Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Programme (MYP), designed for learners between 11 and 16 years of age, offers a comprehensive and balanced curriculum that encourages students to make solid connections between their learning experiences and the real world.

The purpose of the MYP is to develop students’ understanding of themselves as individuals at the same time as they define their role as responsible members of a global community.

Inclusion

The school is committed to supporting all those within our care. We recognise that each student is an individual and our responsibility is to recognise this and act.

The school has an Inclusion Coordinator whose role it is to support students, parents and teachers. The school attempts to work closely with the kommune nurse and the Pedagogisk Psykologisk Tjeneste (Educational Psychology Service) to find a way forward collaboratively.

If you have any concerns about your child, make sure you contact their Homeroom Teacher directly.

English

English Language and Literature and English as an Additional Language will focus upon the development of confidence and self-expression in every learner.

Students will have the chance to engage with a wide variety of texts – both western classics and those translated into English from around the world – and learners will be challenged to reflect upon their own experiences and consider the worldview of others.

ELL and EAL at RIS will aim to ensure not only academic success in the MYP, but also the creation of compassionate, thoughtful and dynamic global citizens who will use their English language ability to affect positive change in their local community and beyond.

At RIS we respect that language is a means of affirming and expressing cultural identity and developing international-mindedness. We view multilingualism as benefiting learning in a variety of ways.

Norwegian

RIS recognizes the importance of Norwegian within our school, as such it is the subject that we invest the most resources. Students receive a similar amount of lesson time as they would in the public school system. Our aim is to provide students with the same capacity to learn the subject as is available in local schools. Students should be able to transfer out of RIS at any time, including Grade 10, into the public school system.

The reality is that the language of instruction at RIS is English, beyond the subjects of Norwegian and Spanish. The language of the playground will change depending on those involved and students are encouraged to involve as many as possible.

Parents and students will need to recognise that the Norwegian learning that would take place in other subjects such as Science and Maths will be taught in English at RIS.
