RIS provides a transdisciplinary programme of
internationally-oriented education to foster the development of the whole child.
Our goal is to become a leading IB World School, offering the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) as well as the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
In order to become authorized by the IB, among other requirements, schools need to prove that they have established a curriculum that is in line with IB guidelines and requirements. Therefore, we are already implementing a curriculum designed in accordance with the IB Standards and Practices
Aware of the fact that some students may need to move to the Norwegian system, we offer Norwegian language classes with a view to maintain a high standard of speaking, reading and writing skills.
The IB learner profile
The learner profile provides a vision of education throughout the school. IB learners strive to be:
The Primary Years
At RIS, the Primary Years (PY) welcomes students from Grade 1-6.
The PY allows for a Transdisciplinary approach to learning, which refers to learning that is not confined by traditional subjects, but conveys learning that has relevance between, across and beyond subjects.
The Middle Years
The Middle Years (MY), designed for learners between 11 and 16 years of age, offers a comprehensive and balanced curriculum that encourages students to make solid connections between their learning experiences and the real world.
The purpose of the MY is to develop students’ understanding of themselves as individuals at the same time as they define their role as responsible members of a global community.
The school is committed to support all those within our care. We recognise that each student is an individual and it is our responsibility to recognise this and act.
The school has an Inclusion Coordinator whose role is to support students, parents and teachers. The school works closely with the kommune nurse and the Pedagogisk Psykologisk Tjeneste (Educational Psychology Service) to collaboratively find a way forward.
If you have any concerns about your child make sure you contact your Homeroom Teacher directly.
English Language and Literature and English as an Additional Language will focus upon the development of confidence and self-expression in every learner.
Students will have the chance to engage with a wide variety of texts – both western classics and those translated into English from around the world – and learners will be challenged to reflect upon their own experiences and consider the worldview of others.
ELL and EAL at RIS will aim to ensure not only academic success in the MYP, but also the creation of compassionate, thoughtful and dynamic global citizens who will use their English language ability to affect positive change in their local community and beyond.
At RIS we respect that language is a means of affirming and expressing cultural identity and developing international-mindedness. We view multilingualism as benefiting learning in a variety of ways.
RIS recognizes the importance of Norwegian within our school, as such it is the subject that we invest the most resources. Students receive a similar amount of lesson time as they would in the public school system. Our aim as a school is to provide students with the same capacity to learn the subject as is available in local schools. Students should be able to transfer out of RIS at any time including Grade 10 into the public school system.
The school teachers who are trained in teaching Norwegian to those new to the subject or requiring extra support
The reality is that the language of instruction in the school is English, beyond the subjects of Norwegian and Spanish. The language of the playground will change depending on those involved and students are encouraged to involve as many as possible.
Parents and students will need to recognize that the Norwegian learning that can take place in other subjects such as science and maths will now be in English.
RIS has developed as series of partnerships to support the teaching and learning in our community.
The school will appoint a Career Counselor whose role will be to help students understand their options and facilitate the process of moving onto the next part of their journey.
Romerike International School will open your eyes to a truly global world of opportunity.
RIS will give our students the chance to engage and to lead in a sustainable world. We will have over 200 students from all over the globe, offering a progressive, research-based curriculum for Grade 1 to Grade 10. Recognising that everyone is unique and by defining individualised learning pathways, we support RIS students in our ever evolving world.
